I have
always had a strong artistic inclination which my parents recognized
very early on. My maternal grandmother, Martha Patterson, was an
accomplished oil painter and took me under her wing as a young girl.
Some of my fondest memories growing up were Saturday morning trips to
the Art Gallery of Ontario with “Nanny” and then joining her in the sun
room at her home as she taught me the basics of oil painting.
I continued with art throughout high school and
was given a two-year scholarship program for high school students which
was run every Saturday afternoon at the AGO. It was here that I was
introduced to live figure drawing and a variety of painting mediums.
Upon graduating from high school, I was accepted
into the Ontario College of Art and Design and graduated with Honours
in 1981 from the Communication and Design department. I then worked for
eight years in Toronto as a full time graphic designer, first with a
downtown studio, and then began my own firm.
While my own business was growing, I was also a
partner in a busy sports store in Toronto and subsequently also started
Hardwood Hills which is a cross country ski and mountain bike resort
just north of Barrie. It soon became apparent that something had to
give so I
wrapped up my Toronto businesses and took on Hardwood Hills as a full
time project in 1990. I sold
Hardwood Hills in 2008 to a business group formed by several long-time
members of the resort and I have once
again dedicated myself to graphic design and fine art on a full-time
basis.
I enjoy working in both oil and pastel and find I
switch back and forth depending on my subject matter. I moved up to a
century home in downtown Bracebridge in July 2008 where my design
office and painting studio are now located. I am an active member of
the Muskoka Arts and Crafts association and co-run the weekly life
drawing studio at the Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge every Wednesday
evening.
I had two one-women shows in my Studio/Gallery in
Oro-Medonte and for 4 years I was a studio stop on the Images Studio
Tour which is held each Thanksgiving weekend. I have been a featured
artist at Woodside Pottery and Gallery in Chraighurst, Ontario and my
work is currently being shown at the Silver Bridge Gallery in
Bracebridge. I am also one of the featured artists in the Muskoka
Islands Art Show on August 14, 2010 on Christmas Island in Lake
Muskoka. My work is now in private
collections from British Columbia to Ireland.
My work can be seen in person by visiting my
